What is the full form of CPU?

Answer»

CPU: Central Processing Unit

The full form of CPU is “Central Processing Unit“. CPU is also called as processor, central processor, main processor or microprocessor. CPU is also known as the brain of the computer. The central processing unit (CPU), is the unit that performs most of the processing inside a computer. To control the flow of instructions and data to and from other parts of the computer, the CPU relies heavily on a chipset, which is a group of microchips located on the motherboard.

Traditionally the term CPU refers to a processor consisting of a control unit and an arithmetic logic unit.

Central Processing Unit (CPU) = Arithmetical Logical Unit (ALU) + Control Unit (CU)

Components of CPU

The CPU is broadly divided into three main parts.

Arithmetical Logical Unit (ALU)

It is a significant part of the CPU. It is responsible for the supervision of all numerical and logical functions, such as subtraction, addition, division, multiplication etc.

Control Unit (CU)

CU is the main component of the CPU. It directs a task to the whole system, and it regulates all the computer activities that occur.

Memory or Register

A register is a particular type of device for memory. The memory stores the information which the processor has to process or already processed.

History

Some important events related to CPU history are as follows:

YearEvent
1823Baron Jons Jackob Berzelius discovered silicon (Si), which is the processor today
1903Nikola Tesla patents electrical logic circuits (gates or switches).
1947John Bardeen, Walter Brattain and William Shockley invented the first transistor at Bell Laboratories.
1958Robert Noyce and Jack Kilby developed the first integrated circuit.
1971Intel introduced the first microprocessor, the Intel 4004.
1991AMD introduced the AM386 microprocessor family.
1993Intel released the Pentium processor. The processor was a 60 MHz processor, contains 3.1 million transistors and sells for $878.00.
2000Intel released the Celeron 533MHz with a 66MHz bus processor.
2006Intel released the Core 2 Duo processor E6320 (4 M cache, 1.86 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB).
2008Intel introduced the first Core i7 desktop processors (i7-920, the i7-940, and the i7-965 Extreme Edition).
2010Intel launched the first Core i5 mobile processors (i5-430M and i5-520E).
2017Intel released the first Core i9 desktop processor, the i9-7900X, in June 2017. It uses the LGA 2066 socket, runs at 3.3 GHz, has 10 cores, and 13.75 MB of L3 cache.
2018Intel introduced the first Core i9 mobile processor, the i9-8950HK. It uses the BGA 1440 socket, runs at 2.9 GHz, has six cores, and features 12 MB L3 cache.

A Personal Computer (PC) can be a microcomputer, a desktop computer, a laptop computer, a tablet PC or a handheld PC.

A typical personal computer assemblage consists of a central processing unit (CPU), which contains the computer’s arithmetic, logic, and control circuitry on an integrated circuit; two types of computer memory, main memory, such as Random-Access Memory (RAM), and auxiliary memory, such as magnetic hard disk or Solid-state drive (SSD) and special optical compact discs, or read-only memory (ROM) discs (CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs); a Power Supply Unit (PSU), a fan for cooling and various input/output devices, such as a display screen, keyboard and mouse, modem, and printer.

PCs are used in the company to perform tasks such as accounting, desktop publishing and word processing as well as running databases and spreadsheets. At home, PCs are primarily used for multimedia entertainment, such as playing games, accessing the Internet, etc. Even though PCs are intended to be used as single user systems, it is common to link them together to form a network, such as a Local Area Network (LAN).

UPS Full Form

Answer»

The full form of UPS is “Uninterruptible Power Supply“. It is used to protect critical loads from utility-supplied power problems, including spikes, brownouts, fluctuations and power outages, all using a dedicated battery. UPS runs on a battery that is used to supply power in the absence of a primary source or when the supply is cut off. Battery size is an important factor in the selection of a UPS system. UPSs are commonly used to protect hardware such as computers, data centers, telecommunications equipment or other electrical equipment where an unexpected power interrupt can result in data loss.

What is the use of UPS in Computer?

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) allows a computer/PC to keep running for at least a short time when the primary power source is lost. Having your computer connected to a UPS protects it from electrical surges and outages. When computers shut down improperly, such as when a power outage happens, it can damage the computer’s internal parts and cause lost data. Having a UPS helps prevent the computer from being improperly shut down and helps protect the computer and its data. A UPS can run a computer for a few minutes which should give you enough time to save all your data so that you don’t lose it. Many UPS now offer software that automatically saves your data and Shuts down your computer. A UPS isn’t much use if you are working from a laptop as they have their own battery source.
