Answer» What is Never Forgotten National Memorial mean?

The Mother Canada monument, officially the Never Forgotten National Memorial, was a project planned for Cape Breton Highlands National Park as a memorial to Canadian soldiers who fought and died overseas. It was meant as a trans-Atlantic complement to the Canadian National Vimy Memorial in France.

The $25 million project was to include a 24-metre statue of a bereft mother, her hands outstretched towards Europe and the Canada Bereft monument at the Vimy Memorial in France. It would also have included an interpretive centre, a restaurant, and a souvenir shop among other things. It was to be funded through donations collected by the Never Forgotten National Memorial Foundation headed by Toronto businessman Tony Patrick Trigiani. The project had been conceived by Trigiani after he visited a Canadian World War I cemetery in Europe.

Opinion on the Monument was divided. Supporting petitions from Cape Breton (New Waterford, Dominion, Glace Bay, Iona, Sydney, Ingonish), as well as from Hants County, Grand Prairie, Alberta, central Ontario and a Trans Canada petition were presented to Parliament by the local MP, the Honourable Mark Eyking on January 28, 2016 at 10:15am. A citizens' action group, Friends of Green Cove, opposed the project, launching a letter and information campaign focused mostly on the location within the National Park. The Green Cove location chosen for the project is a pink granite outcrop along the iconic Cabot Trail, one of the few places where the sea is accessible to the public, and, unlike the Vimy Memorial, has absolutely no military significance. Trigiani has maintained his refusal to even consider other locations.

One of the most frequent justifications for the location is absolutely false. Major-General Lewis MacKenzie (Ret.) said in an interview "This area was one of the last sightings of Canada as hundreds of thousands of troops left Sydney and Halifax". Seeing any part of the Cape Breton Highlands while sailing from Halifax to Europe is an impossibility because a ship must be less than 84 kilometers offshore for the Cape Breton Highlands to appear above the horizon. Lt. Col. Ferguson Mobbs (Ret.) of the Bradford Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion in Ontario commented that the statue "will stand on what was the easternmost point of Canada in 1914, before Newfoundland joined confederation, in a direct line with Vimy Ridge". Mobbs apparently doesn't know that even the Fortress of Louisbourg (45° 53′ 32.57″ N, 59° 59′ 10.36″ W) is farther east than Green Cove. (Note the coordinates of this proposed monument at the top of this Wiki page.) The easternmost point in Cape Breton is a small outcrop (45° 57' 4.9644" N 59° 47' 18.4596" W) between the bays of Anse aux Cannes and Kelpy Cove on the eastern shore of southern part of Cape Breton Island, a short drive northeast of Louisbourg.

The project was approved by the Conservative government of Stephen Harper, which donated $100,000 to the memorial foundation without any public input or discussion. It was cancelled by Parks Canada in February 2016 following the 2015 federal election that brought a Liberal government to power, in response to opposition by those who wished to preserve the Green Cove site in its natural state, and by others who believed the proposed monument to be in poor taste, such as The Globe and Mail which, in an editorial, described it as "hubristic, ugly and just plain wrong".

Answer» What is Frank Melville Memorial Park mean?

The Frank Melville Memorial Park is a privately run, publicly accessible park surrounding the Melville Mill Pond in Setauket, New York. It was dedicated in 1937 to the memory of Frank Melville Jr., father of local philanthropist Ward Melville. The park was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 19, 2010. The 24 acre park contains a walking trail and is also home to the Three Village Garden Club Arboretum, which is maintained by a group of local volunteers.

A series of mills have inhabited the Mill Pond as early as 1660. The current mill house was built with the help of Donald A. Spetta in 1937 and contains a running simulated mill wheel which continues this historical legacy. The mill house also services as the park headquarters.

Another historic structure is the Satterly Barn which was built in the early 1700s. A stable was added around 1937 and the structure was re-sided and re-roofed in 1968 under the direction of Ward Melville. Nearby is the John Satterly House which is claimed to be one of the oldest houses in the Setauket area. It was completely restored in 1968 by Ward Melville.

Another property owned by the park foundation is the Bates House, a 1922 Colonial Revival-style house that was acquired in 1955. The house is rented by the foundation year round for special events.

Sitting adjacent to the park on the East side is the Patriot's Hollow State Forest. It is home to "Patriot's rock", which was once a meeting place of the Setalcott Indians and the site of Reverend Nathaniel Brewster's first sermon. During the Revolutionary war, it was the site of a skirmish with Tory forces garrisoned in the nearby Presbyterian church on August 24, 1772. The property was sold to the Three Village Community Trust in 2010.

Answer» What is Friday Morning Music Club mean?

The Friday Morning Music Club originated in Washington, D.C. in the mid-1880s as an informal club for the study of music. Members of the club were required to audition to become a part of the club, and had to take part in musical performances. Early activities included reading from musical periodicals, the creation of a musical library, the creation of a lecture series, and the hosting of other musical groups for their DC performances.

Over the years, the club grew in size, and requirements for membership became more rigorous. In 1894, the club was incorporated in the District of Columbia, and the headquarters moved from the various members’ homes to the music room of the Washington Club, located at 1710 I Street. As the club has grown over the years, it has been located in various places, including the Assembly room of the Cosmos Club and the Raleigh Hotel. Today, its headquarters and archives are located at the Historical Society of Washington, D.C., 801 K St., N.W., Washington, D.C., and its meetings and programs are held at Charles Sumner School, 1201 17th St., N.W., Washington, D.C.

The period from 1943-1949 was extremely active, and included the formation of groups of different categories, including pianists, singers, organists, composers and others who met on a regular basis to study and to listen to their own performances. Additionally, during this period, Miss Gretchen Hood, the opera singer, bequeathed money in her will to assist promising young musicians in their concert careers. This was the beginning of The Friday Morning Music Club Foundation, which was incorporated March 22, 1948, to help aspiring musical students.

In 1970, Foundation Director Willa Mae Koehn moved to change the name of the National Auditions to the Washington International Competition (WIC), and the first competition under this name was held for singers on April 23 and 24, 1971. Over the years, notable winners have included: Jessye Norman, Gwendolyn Bradley, Jane Coop, (who is also a judge of the competition), Sofya Gulyak, and Jie Chen.

The Foundation continues to hold annual auditions alternating between pianists, singers, string players and composers, and grants awards. It draws its applicants from all over the world. The next Washington International Competition will be held for at the Kennedy Center on May 27–28, 2011 for pianists.

NRHP meaning in Community ?

Answer» What is National Register of Historical Places mean?

The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance. A property listed in the National Register, or located within a National Register Historic District, may qualify for tax incentives derived from the total value of expenses incurred in preserving the property.

The passage of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in 1966 established the National Register and the process for adding properties to it. Of the more than one and a half million properties on the National Register, 95,000 are listed individually. The remainder are contributing resources within historic districts.

For most of its history, the National Register has been administered by the National Park Service (NPS), an agency within the United States Department of the Interior. Its goals are to help property owners and interest groups, such as the National Trust for Historic Preservation, as well as to coordinate, identify and protect historic sites in the United States. While National Register listings are mostly symbolic, their recognition of significance provides some financial incentive to owners of listed properties. Protection of the property is not guaranteed. During the nomination process, the property is evaluated in terms of the four criteria for inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places. The application of those criteria has been the subject of criticism by academics of history and preservation, as well as the public and politicians.

Occasionally, historic sites outside the country proper, but associated with the United States (such as the American Legation in Tangier) are also listed. Properties can be nominated in a variety of forms, including individual properties, historic districts and multiple property submissions (MPS). The Register categorizes general listings into one of five types of properties: district, site, structure, building or object. National Register Historic Districts are defined geographical areas consisting of contributing and non-contributing properties. Some properties are added automatically to the National Register when they become administered by the National Park Service. These include National Historic Landmarks (NHL), National Historic Sites (NHS), National Historical Parks, National Military Parks, National Memorials and some National Monuments. (Federal properties can be proclaimed National Monuments under the Antiquities Act because of either their historical or natural significance. They are managed by multiple agencies. Only monuments that are historic in character and managed by the National Park Service are listed administratively in the National Register.)
