The Pine Mountain Music Festival (often abbreviated PMMF) is a music festival held in the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan each summer. The festival's schedule varies each year, typically including at least one major opera, a night of scenes from famous operas, performances by several chamber music groups, a symphony, organ and voice recitals, and performances by members of the Orchestra Fellowship Program. Various master classes (including organ and voice) are also offered to community members.

Venues range across the western Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin, focusing on the cities of Houghton, Ontonagon, Iron Mountain, Marquette, and Land O' Lakes in Wisconsin. Most performances tour among these cities. The major performances and a season ending gala take place in and around Houghton and Marquette between early June and mid July.

The festival began in 1991 as a series of chamber music performances, and quickly expanded to include operas and symphonies. The PMMF has been host to the first performance of a locally written opera about the history of the Keweenaw. Musicians involved in the festival also mentor high school students in the Orchestra Fellowship Program at Michigan Technological University, who perform as part of the festival.

With the 2020 edition cancelled as the COVID-19 pandemic was to blame, the 31st was deferred to 2021.

The QCF Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) qualification, sometimes referred to colloquially as "PETALS", is an initial teacher training qualification, studied at QCF Level 3 or 4, for those new to teaching, or wanting to start out as associate teachers, or currently teaching in the United Kingdom and requiring certification or qualification, or to become full teachers in Further Education (FE) or in the Lifelong Learning sector of education.

The PTLLS is currently the lowest of the teaching qualifications specifically for this sector of education, with others being the QCF Level 3/4 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS) and the QCF Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) qualifications. Following successful completion of the PTLLS and upon achieving the qualification, an associate teacher would then have to take the more advanced CTLLS for the Certificate and after that the DTLLS for the Diploma.

To achieve the certification, the learner/associate teacher/trainer does not have to be in a teaching role in order to be assessed, making it a very achievable certification and a suitable starting point for anyone wanting to become an educator. Assessment is in the form of a 'micro-teach' session and submission of assignments and portfolio of evidence. The Level 4 CTLLS, however, requires one to be in a teaching or training role in order to be assessed 'on-the-job', as well as through the submission of assignments and a portfolio of evidence.

The PTLLS is the first stage of a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) in Lifelong learning and is currently required prior to achieving the CTLLS and DTLLS to gain Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. It is a requirement that all teachers obtain the PTLLS award, or the equivalent, to be able to continue to teach in the further education sector in the UK.

The PTLLS is in the process of being phased out along with the CTLLS and the DTLLS, and will eventually be replaced with the Award in Education and Training qualification at QCF Level 3, 4 and 5, respectively.

The Dictionary Society of North America (DSNA) was founded in 1975 to encourage scholarly and professional activities that have to do with dictionaries and lexicography. Since 1994, DSNA has been a member of the American Council of Learned Societies.

The society, one of the largest professional associations for dictionary-makers, has more than 400 members and sponsors a biennial conference for the presentation of scholarly papers on aspects of lexicographical history, theory and practice. It also publishes an annual journal of dictionary scholarship, Dictionaries (founded in 1979; accessible online through Project Muse), and a semiannual newsletter. Copies of the newsletter and tables of contents of the journal are archived at the society's web page (see link below), which also provides news about dictionaries and membership and conference information.

Distinguished former members of the society include Frederic G. Cassidy (1907–2000), editor of the Dictionary of American Regional English, Allen Walker Read (1906–2002), Clarence L. Barnhart (1900-1993), Laurence Urdang (1927–2008), Ladislav Zgusta (1924–2004), Richard W. Bailey (1939–2011), and Madeline Kripke (1943–2020).

From 1995 until 2008, the society made an annual award underwritten by Laurence Urdang, to support promising lexicographical research projects. Two awards for 2009 were conferred in his memory.

Michael Adams has prepared a history of the early years of the society; the first of two installments appeared in volume 35 of Dictionaries (2014), pp. 1–35: "The Dictionary Society of North America: A History of the Early Years (Part I)".
