The Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) is a community-owned electric utility serving Sacramento County and parts of Placer County. It is one of the ten largest publicly owned utilities in the United States, generating the bulk of its power through natural gas (estimated 56% of production total in 2009) and large hydroelectric generation plants (22% in 2009). SMUD's green power (renewable) energy output was estimated as 19% in 2009.

SMUD owned the Rancho Seco Nuclear Generating Station nuclear power plant, shut down by a vote of the utility's rate-payers in the late 1980s. Although the nuclear plant is now decommissioned, its now-unused iconic towers remain on the site. Solar arrays and the 500-megawatt Cosumnes gas-fired plant have risen in proximity to the towers.

SMUD's headquarters building, built in the late 1950s on the edge of the East Sacramento neighborhood, is notable for its mural by Sacramento artist Wayne Thiebaud. The mural wraps around the ground floor of the building and is accessible to the public. It is one of the earliest major works by the artist, and remains his largest installation to date.

The Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) (Public Law 101-535) is a 1990 United States Federal law. It was signed into law on November 8, 1990 by President George H. W. Bush.

The law gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority to require nutrition labeling of most foods regulated by the Agency; and to require that all nutrient content claims (for example, 'high fiber', 'low fat', etc.) and health claims meet FDA regulations. The act did not require restaurants to comply with the same standards.

The regulations became effective for health claims, ingredient declarations, and percent juice labeling on May 8, 1993 (but percent juice labeling was exempted until May 8, 1994).

Effective Jan. 1, 2006, the Nutrition Facts Labels on packaged food products are required by the FDA to list how many grams of trans fatty acid (trans fat) are contained within one serving of the product.

Peace and conflict studies is a social science field that identifies and analyzes violent and nonviolent behaviours as well as the structural mechanisms attending conflicts (including social conflicts), with a view towards understanding those processes which lead to a more desirable human condition. A variation on this, peace studies (irenology), is an interdisciplinary effort aiming at the prevention, de-escalation, and solution of conflicts by peaceful means, thereby seeking "victory" for all parties involved in the conflict.

This social science is in contrast to military studies, which has as its aim on the efficient attainment of victory in conflicts, primarily by violent means to the satisfaction of one or more, but not all, parties involved. SGSM Network, formerly known as The South Grand Senior Ministry, began in 2001 in partnership with some local South Saint Louis, Missouri Catholic parishes along the South Grand Avenue Corridor in St. Louis. SGSM started as a collaboration of only 2 churches, St. Stephen Protomarter and St. Cecilia, both located at the southernmost part of Grand Avenue. Though this organization started small, with church support and volunteers, the ministry was created to provide assistance and care to senior citizens throughout the Greater Saint Louis area.

To reflect this expansion, South Grand Senior Ministry became SGSM Network in 2008, and the organization has expanded throughout the St. Louis Metro area to include Grand Center, Northeast County Deanery, South County, South Grand, and the Lindenwood area (now independent). These different areas are referred to as clusters. The Network is meant to help organize religious communities and parishes of many different faiths to build active and solid partnerships with congregation members, area businesses, and neighbors so they can together provide volunteer opportunities and direct services that help to improve the quality of life for senior citizens.

There are five major components of the work the SGSM Network does throughout the metropolitan area. These include, Health, Transportation, Socialization, Case Management and minor home repair. The SGSM Network also sends out a bi-monthly newsletter to seniors members of all participating parishes and religious communities giving information to seniors about issues affecting them as well as promoting activities and seminars in their communities.
