The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice (TDI) is an organization within Dartmouth College "dedicated to improving health care through education, research, policy reform, leadership improvement, and communication with patients and the public." It was founded in 1988 by John Wennberg as the Center for the Evaluative Clinical Sciences (CECS); a reorganization in 2007 led to TDI's current structure.

The institute provides a graduate-level education program involving elements of both Dartmouth's Graduate Arts and Sciences Programs and the Geisel School of Medicine. It grants Masters in Public Health degrees as well as Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Health Policy and Clinical Science degrees. The institute is located at One Medical Center Drive, WTRB, Level 5 on the Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital campus, Lebanon, NH. The institute's largest policy product is the Dartmouth Atlas of Health Care, which documents unwarranted variation in the American health care system.

Dr. Anna Tosteson has served as interim director since October 2018, when former director Elliott S. Fisher and chief of strategy Adam Keller were placed on paid administrative leave following a complaint about conduct in the workplace. The investigation into misconduct concluded in April 2019 and resulted in Fisher's demotion and Keller's resignation. This followed the resignation of Professor H. Gilbert Welch in 2018 after Dartmouth College concluded he committed plagiarism. As a condition of his return directly set by the Geisel School of Medicine, Fisher has been banned physically from the 5th floor of the Williamson Building, where most of TDI is housed, for a period of two years.

Cancer Research UK is a cancer research and awareness charity in the United Kingdom and Isle of Man, formed on 4 February 2002 by the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. As the world's largest independent cancer research charity it conducts research by the charity's own staff and by its grant-funded researchers. It also provides information about cancer and runs campaigns aimed at raising awareness and influencing public policy.

The organisation's work is almost entirely funded by the public. It raises money through donations, legacies, community fundraising, events, retail and corporate partnerships. Over 40,000 people are regular volunteers.

Alternative cancer treatment describes any cancer treatment or practice that is not part of the conventional standard of cancer care. These include special diets and exercises, chemicals, herbs, devices, and manual procedures. Most alternative cancer treatments do not have high-quality evidence supporting their use. Concerns have been raised about the safety of some of them. Some have even been found to be unsafe in certain settings. Despite this, many untested and disproven treatments are used around the world. Promoting or marketing such treatments is illegal in most of the developed world.

Alternative cancer treatments are typically contrasted with experimental cancer treatments – science-based treatment methods – and complementary treatments, which are non-invasive practices used in combination with conventional treatment. All approved chemotherapy medications were considered experimental treatments before completing safety and efficacy testing.

Since the late 19th century, medical researchers have established modern cancer care through the development of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapies, and refined surgical techniques. As of 2019, only 32.9% of cancer patients in the United States died within five years of their diagnosis. Despite their effectiveness, many conventional treatments are accompanied by a wide range of side effects, including pain, fatigue, and nausea. Some side effects can even be life-threatening. Many supporters of alternative treatments claim increased effectiveness and decreased side effects when compared to conventional treatments. However, one retrospective cohort study showed that patients using alternative treatments instead of conventional treatments were 2.5 times more likely to die within five years.

Most alternative cancer treatments have not been tested in proper clinical trials. Among studies that have been published, the quality is often poor. A 2006 review of 196 clinical trials that studied unconventional cancer treatments found a lack of early-phase testing, little rationale for dosing regimens, and poor statistical analyses. These kinds of treatments have appeared and vanished throughout history.

The Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) is a fund for cancer research. The ICRF was founded in 1975 by a group of American and Canadian physicians, scientists and lay people who sought to prevent the permanent loss of Israel's most promising cancer researchers to foreign universities due to the lack of funding in Israel for newly minted Ph.D.s, post-doctoral fellows and accomplished young scientists (a phenomenon known to many as Israel's "brain drain"). With chapters in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal and Jerusalem, ICRF annually sponsors a rigorous grant review process conducted by an expert panel of U.S. and Canadian scientists and oncologists, and modeled on the NIH grant-making process.

Awards are granted directly to the most promising and capable Israeli cancer researchers at all of the leading (more than 20) academic and biomedical research centers throughout Israel. ICRF has funded more than $63 million to-date in awards to Israeli cancer researchers via more than 2,349 fellowships, project grants, career development awards and professorships. Grants have been provided to over 20 institutions including all major hospitals, universities and cancer research projects throughout Israel. Breakthrough discoveries by ICRF-funded scientists have led to the development of: Gleevec -used in the successful treatment of chronic myelogenous leukemia; Doxil - used in the treatment of breast & ovarian cancer as well as AIDS; p53 – a key tumor suppressor; RAD 51 which identifies the likelihood of breast cancer occurring in women who carry the BRCA 2 gene and Velcade - listed in the Wall Street Journal as the top medical breakthrough of 2003 and used in the treatment of multiple myeloma. The International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI) is an international umbrella organization of national public health institutes (NPHIs), public health government agencies working to improve national disease prevention and response. IANPHI is made up of 100+ members, located in more than 90 countries. An important goal of IANPHI is to improve health outcomes by strengthening NPHIs or supporting countries in creating new NPHIs.

As of 2021 IANPHI’s president is professor Duncan Selbie, former chief executive of Public Health England. The IANPHI Secretariat is based at Santé Publique France, and the US Office is located at the Emory University Global Health Institute in Atlanta, GA.
