CDS: Chief of Defence Staff

In the Indian army, CDS stands for “Chief of Defence Staff“. It is the professional tri-service chief of the Indian Armed Forces and the senior-most uniformed military adviser to the Government of India. General Bipin Rawat was the first CDS of India. He was appointed on 30 December 2019 and assumed office from 1 January 2020. Gen. Bipin Rawat has died on 08 December 2021 in an IAF Mi-17 helicopter crash in Tamil Nadu. Along with him his wife and members of his personal staff also died in the crash.

A Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) will have the same salary and perquisites as the three service chiefs (who are also four-star Generals). Apart from heading the department of military affairs, he will also hold the charge of permanent chairman, chiefs of staff committee (CoSC). While the CDS will act as the principal military adviser to the defence minister on all tri-services matters, the three service chiefs will continue to advise the minister on matters exclusively concerning their respective services. The department of military affairs will focus on promoting jointness in procurement, training and staffing for the tri-services.

The position was first officially suggested in 1999 following the Kargil War through the recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee. Although a long-talked-about position in India, the official announcement was made public by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day speech on 15 August 2019 at Red Fort, New Delhi. On 24 December 2019, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) formally announced the creation of the position, a four-star general, a tri-service Chief, that shall lead the defence forces as well as take up other roles such as head of the Department of Military Affairs under the Ministry of Defence.

CDS: Combined Defence Services

CDS stands for “Combined Defence Services“. CDS is an All-India level exam conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission) This exam is a Central Government designed and runned examination conducted for the recruitment of Commissioned Officers in India Army, Navy and Air Force of India. Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam is for Graduates and Post- Graduates only, and finds high importance in the Jobs area. This is also followed by Personal interview which is equally difficult to crack. Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for the exam.

The Notification for the CDS examination is usually released in the months of October and June, and the examinations for the same are conducted in February and November month respectively. The candidates who qualified in the written exam are shortlisted for an interview by a Services Selection Board (SSB) which evaluates a candidate’s suitability for a career in the Indian Armed Forces. SSB interview lasts for approximately a week, during this process a candidate undergoes various physical, psychological and group tests to ascertain whether he is an officer material or not. Apart from SSB interview, Air Force academy (IAF) candidates who have applied for flying branch are tested for Pilot Aptitude Battery Test (PABT). After these tests, candidates undergo medical examination before finally admitted into their respective academies and after the successful completion of training, they are inducted into the armed forces.

CDS Eligibility Criteria 2022

To be eligible for CDS 2022 exam, candidates need to fulfill the following eligibility criteria.

Age Limits, Sex and Marital Status

  • For Indian Military Academy (IMA), unmarried candidates born not earlier than January 2, 1997 and not later than January 1, 2002 can only apply.
  • For Indian Naval Academy (IMA), unmarried male candidates born not earlier than January 2, 1997 and not later than January 1, 2002 are eligible.
  • Candidates applying for Air Force Academy should be between 20 to 24 years as on January 1, 2021 (born not earlier than January 2, 1997 and not later than January 1, 2001).
  • For Officers’ Training Academy (SSC Course for men), unmarried male candidates born not earlier than January 2, 1996 and not later than January 1, 2002 are eligible for the exam.
  • For Officers’ Training Academy (SSC Women Non-Technical Course), candidates should be unmarried and born not earlier than January 2, 1996 and not later than January 1, 2002.

Educational Qualification

  • For IMA and Officers’ Training Academy, candidates must be a graduate.
  • For Indian Naval Academy, candidates must have a degree in Engineering from a recognised university.
  • For Air Force Academy, a degree with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering is necessary.

SSB: Service Selection Board

In Army, SSB stands for Service Selection Board. It is an organization that assesses the candidates for becoming officers into the Indian Armed Forces (i.e. Army, Air Force and Navy). SSB is created by the Defense Ministry of India to conduct the interview for recruiting officers in Indian soldiers. It is designed to test “officer like qualities” in the candidates.

An Service Selection Board (SSB) board comprises assessors who are officials in the Indian Armed Forces and have their specialization as Psychologist, Group Task Officer(GTO) and Interviewing Officer. Altogether, there are thirteen Services Selection Boards across India, out of which four seats are for Indian Army, four seats are for Indian Air Force and five seats for Indian Navy. SSB is a 5 to 6 days assessment process. Successful candidates will remain for an intensive medical examination which takes four to five days at a military hospital.

  • For SSB recruitment, candidate age should lie between 18 – 40 years.
  • Matriculation (10th Pass) or equivalent from a recognized board or institute.
  • Female candidate shouldn’t be married or issueless widow.
  • The candidate must clear the Combined Defense Services Examination conducted by UPSC.
  • Candidated should clear PST and PET.

ITBP: Indo-Tibetan Border Police

The full form of ITBP is Indo-Tibetan Border Police. It is one of the seven Central Armed Police Forces of India. Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was raised on October 24, 1962 for reorganizing the frontier intelligence and security set up along the Indo-Tibetan border. The deployment of ITBP was intended to guard India’s border with Tibet. The first chief of the ITBP was the designated Inspector General, Balbir Singh, formerly a police officer belonging to the Intelligence Bureau (IB). S S Deswal is the current (as of July, 2021) Director General of ITBP.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is trained in Civil Medical Camp, Disaster Management, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Disasters. Two battalions of ITBP are deployed in the National Disaster Response Force. The motto of ITBP is Shaurya, Dridata, Karm Nishtha that translates to Valor, Determination and Devotion to duty in English.

ITBP has undergone a massive expansion plan to provide much needed relief to its troops who remain deployed in the tough high altitude terrain for most part of their service. The ITBP, which started with 4 Battalions, since its reorganization in 1978 has expanded to a force of 60 Battalions with 15 Sectors and a sanctioned strength of 89,432 along 89 Frontiers. ITBP is the only Central Armed Police Force in India, which has combatised stress counsellors in its Field units, Formations Including the Ranks – Deputy Commandants ESC, Assistant Commandant-ESC, Inspector-ESC, Sub Inspector-ESC and Head Constable-ESC.

The CISF came into existence in 1969 with a modest beginning, having three battalions, to provide integrated security cover to the Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) which, in those years, occupied the commanding heights of the economy. What is the full form of IAF?

The full form of IAF is Indian Air Force. It is the 4th strongest air force on the globe. Its primary mission is to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during armed conflict. The President of India holds the rank of Supreme Commander of the IAF. The Chief of the Air Staff, an air chief marshal, is a four-star officer and is responsible for the bulk of operational command of the Air Force. 1) NDA: National Defence Academy

The full form of NDA is “National Defence Academy“. The National Defence Academy (NDA) is the joint services academy of the Indian Armed Forces, where cadets of the three services, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force train together before they go on to respective service academies for further pre-commissioning training. The National Defence Academy exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The NDA is located in Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. The Commandant of the National Defence Academy is the head and overall in-charge of the academy. The Commandant is a Three-star rank officer from the three Services in rotation. It is the first tri-service academy in the world. The National Defence Academy entrance exam is held twice a year, generally in the month of April and September.

Qualification

Candidates who have Physics, Chemistry and Maths can choose in all three Services – The Airforce, Navy and the Army. If you want to Just apply for Indian army, you just need to be a 12th Class pass in any stream of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University. To get into NDA, A three stage selection Procedure is followed, i.e. Written Exam, Service Selection Board Interview and Finally Medical examination.

2) NDA: National Democratic Alliance

The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is a coalition of political parties in India. It was established in 1998. NDA is an alliance of center-right and right wing political parties in India. It is led by the BJP. The first prime minister of this coalition was Mr. Atal Bihari Vajpayee who also awarded “Bharat Ratna” later. The coalition ruled India from 1998 to 2004. The alliance returned to power in the 2014 General Elections with a combined vote share of 38.5%. Its leader, Shri Narendra Modi, was sworn in as Prime Minister of India on 26 May 2014. In the 2019 General Elections, the Alliance further increased its tally to 353 seats with combined vote share of 45.43%.

IMA: Indian Military Academy

The full form of IMA is Indian Military Academy. It is a highly reputed officer training academy of the Indian Army located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India. Indian Military Academy (IMA) was set up in 1932 to train officers of the Indian Army. Its Motto is “Valor and Wisdom”. The Academy is known for its glorious history and valiant traditions which are not only an integral part of the Nation’s proud heritage but also form an indispensable sheet anchor of independent India’s national security. As of April 2020, Lieutenant General J S Negi is the Commandant of IMA. The academy is spread over 1400 acres of land. It trains only male candidates; transforms them into army officers. It not only trains the candidates for the battlefield but also provides athletic facilities to groom the future army officers.

How to Join IMA?

The common exams through which you can join IMA are given below;

  • NDA Exam: Young and valiant boys, who have passed the 12th class with PCM, are eligible to appear in NDA. The age limit is 16.5 to 19 years. After clearing the NDA exam, the candidates undergo 3-year training at NDA Khadakwasla and after that 1-year training at IMA. Notification for this is made twice a year in the month of June and Dec.
  • CDSE Exam: A male graduate who has cleared the CDSE and the subsequent stages (SSB and Medical Fitness) can join the IMA. The notification is made twice a year, in the month of March/ April and September/October.
  • Technical Graduate Course (TGC): The students who are in the final year or have completed BE/BTech in the required subjects can Join IMA through Technical Graduate Course. The duration of the training is 1 year. Look out for the advertisement published in leading newspapers/employment news in May/Jun & Nov/Dec every year.
