PSC: Public Service Commission

The full form of PSC is Public Service Commission. It is a central authority that is responsible for conducting recruitment examinations for posts under various categories of departments of the Government of India. The old name of this exam which is still being used by some people is Provincial Civil Service (PCS).

What is PSC?

Public Service Commission (PSC) works at the central level and also at the state level. The provision for the establishment of Public Service Commission for the Central as well as for the State was provided in Article 315 to 323 in Part XIV of the Constitution of India. The constitution reserves the power to remove members, its power and functions or to form an independent Public Service Commission.

State Public Service Commission Exam

PSC exam is conducted to recruit people for various government posts in the respective states. Government jobs are something which is important for the whole country, it makes for stable salary and stable running of the system. But the process that selects the candidates to fit the job is not an easy task. And this is what the Public Service Commission does through PSC Exams.

The pattern of the exam consists of three stages which include preliminary exam, main exam followed by an interview. It is mandatory for the candidate to qualify the preliminary and main examination in order to appear in the interview. Generally the exam is conducted in objective type, however, the syllabus varies from state to state. The competition is very high as lakhs of candidates will appear in the exam for a few hundred seats.

Qualification for PSC

The basic educational qualification required to appear in the Public Service Commission exam is given below:

• Applicant should have completed Graduate Degree or Post Graduate or Diploma from recognized University.
• Candidate age should be between 18 to 33 years.
• Selection The process consists of three stages i.e. Preliminary Exam, Main Exam and Personal Interview.

According to the Constitution of India, the expenses of the Central or a State Public Service Commission, including the salaries, allowances and pensions payable to the members or employees of the Commission, shall be charged to the Consolidated Fund of India or, as the case may also be taken from the Consolidated Fund of the State.
